Wouter G. van Veen

Wouter G. van Veen

Aspiring developer & scientist

Biography

I recently finished my PhD with the topic “Aerodynamics of insect flight”. The defense of my thesis is planned for the 5th of October. I started out as an aerospace engineering student focusing on supersonic Aerodynamics. For my PhD I switched to subsonic flow and used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to uncover the secrets behind flapping flight.

After my PhD I will move to Jena in the eastern part of Germany. Here I hope to continue my career as a (scientific) software developer.

Experience

PhD candidate

Wageningen University & Research

October 2015 – May 2020 Wageningen, the Netherlands
I started my PhD with the seemingly humble and simple question: How do insects fly? For this I tried to find the relation between the performed kinematics of the insect and the resulting aerodynamic forces. I used large parametric studies to systematically find and quantify this relation with the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). I will defend my thesis on the 5th of October 2020.

Graduate intern

Institut de Méchanique des Fluides de Toulouse (IMFT)

November 2013 – April 2014 Toulouse, France
Research in a international project on the causes of transition on shock wave boundary layer interactions (TFAST) Independently executing of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations using in-house code (Navier-Stokes Multi-Block NSMB)

Several jobs in the retail industry

Master Student

Technical University Delft

August 2013 – August 2015 Delft the Netherlands
I specialized in the field of Aerodynamics. During my internship in France I learned the ins and outs of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). I used this knowledge during my master thesis entitled: Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes modeling of shock wave boundary-layer interactions

Bachelor Student

Technical University Delft

September 2007 – August 2013
During my Bachelor Aerospace engineering I did a lot of extra work. I took place in the board of my rowing society and in several committees. I used this experience during my final bachelor project: Design of a hypersonic re-entry vehicle, the Hyperion 3.
